The Departed (2006) // Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Here come the academy awards:

Academy Award Nominees

Best Picture Nominees include:

Babel
The Departed
Letters From Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen

Unfortunately, I have only seen 2 of the 5: Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed. These were phenomenal films.

The Departed was violent, but compelling. Scorsese worked his magic and I was glued to the screen. After the film, a little old lady sitting behind us asked us if we liked the movie. I replied with "It was pretty intense," and she replied with, "That was the worst movie I've seen in my whole life." It got a little laugh out of me because she was just so cute. But if you're not ready for a violent movie, try Little Miss Sunshine instead.

Little Miss Sunshine was unconventional and hilarious. It had some slightly controversial parts, but this little indie film did an amazing job at creating some great characters and getting the whole theater roaring with laughter. The only thing that bothered me about this film was the locations being out of place on their road trip from Albuquerque, NM to Redondo Beach, CA (which was actually shot on the Ventura pier), but it was a very minor annoyance of an exceptional film.

I would like to see Babel and The Queen, and I really haven't heard anything about Letters of Iwo Jima. I'm sure I'll end up seeing that as well.

I saw Babel and Little Miss Sunshine, which were both great! I also got the chance to hear the Little Miss Sunshine writer, Michael Arndt, talk about making the film and his process as a writer. I think that Little Miss Sunshine is an excellent movie, because it has a heart and isn't afraid to expose people's foibles. Babel was a very different movie, but I was pleased to see the variety that the film took on and I was happy that the two movie stars, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett didn't overshadow the plot, which I am afraid happens frequently in Hollywood films. Overall, I agree with Kristin about Little Miss Sunshine and thanks for the awesome reviews! :) P.S. I never saw The Last Kiss because it looked bad to me, nice to know that I was correct. ;)
